CODE OF ETHICS
During Crisis and Disaster
• Report to whoever is in charge within the Institution or Incident Command System.
• Adhere to Institutional or Incident Command System rules & regulations at all times.
• Offer spiritual care through the practice of presence and hospitality.
• Identify and solve immediate concrete problems.
• Meet, accept, and respect persons exactly as they are.
• Encourage individuals to talk about their experiences while remaining an active listener.
• Recognize normal stress reactions and find or make referrals to resources who will address the immediate problems.
• Do no harm—never evangelize, proselytize, or exploit a vulnerable person reacting to a traumatic event.
• Protect Confidentiality.
• Respect social diversity and cross-cultural settings.
• Function at levels appropriate to your training and educational background.
• Help the individual to understand and normalize what has happened.
• Know the available resources and assistance and mental health referral protocols.
• Follow-up, especially with anniversaries and other important dates, if deemed necessary.
